Wakie wakie, cheeky monkeys!

Day 4: Amsterdam Sightseeing

Monday, May 27, 2002

Breakfast of warm eggs, bread, and cold cuts. Went to Edam where lady talked to us about cheese making. Couldn't understand her. Didn't see any cheese being made.

I have no clue what I'm talking about. I'm unprepared.

So what did you do last night? Oh. I can tell. Some guy showed us how clogs were made from a tree. Seeing the way we looked, he concluded that we went to Amsterdam the night before.

Went to the next room where there were dishes of various kinds of cheeses. (Kind of makes you wonder how long those cheese have been there.)

Inside, we tried on the various clogs, big ones, colorful ones, oversized ones... Outside, photo opportunity.

Why does Derek want this picture? You have to hold down the button for a while.

Arrived too early at town. Wandered around. Buildings arched over to allow furniture to be pullied up.
For some of us, first time on bike in many years. Kyle told us about a time when one of his cyclists rode into the river. (Thanks, Kyle.)

For some reason, some short people ended up on bikes for tall people, and some tall people ended up on bikes for short people.

Stopped biking a bit to look at a dyke.

Stopped biking a bit for group photo opportunity at a windmill.

Don't forget to use my camera!

Returned bikes. Major restroom line inside afterward. Someone knocked over a bike and caused a domino effect inside.

Kyle gave us Amsterdam map, meeting times, what to see, and what tram to take before diamond excursion.

Liz, Julie, and I went to Van Gogh museum. Long line moved faster than Liz could get a hot dog and soda. Couldn't find "Starry Night," which we found out later was in Chicago.
The locals were friendly and very helpful about giving me directions. And they spoke English!

Parted from group to go to Heinekin, which was closed.

Took tram 20 for Anne Frank's House. Found my group on the tram.

Toured Anne Frank's House. Saw her actual diary. Pushed a few buttons downstairs during Eminem presentation to vote on free speech.

Found souvenir shop with normal tie design on front and something nude... I mean "new," in the back. Liz stopped by an Internet cafe, which was smokin' (not fire or cigarettes, though). Julie contacted someone at home while we waited outside.
Went to Damrak to meet Kyle outside Victoria. Got on bus where Kyle described last night's activities: "Dale described it best, people went up to me like demons went around that guy in the movie "Ghost" before taking him away." Last night's quote of girl taking off people's shirts: "It's okay. I'm married."
I just need to remember this place. Dined at Sea Palace, a Chinese floating restaurant. Spiros demonstrated his accent skills from "The Simpsons" and "Austin Powers."

Food sucked. You can tell because the Asians got chopsticks and unrecognizable food (the way it should be) and we got nicely prepared recognizable food. Table behind my group's left for smoke. I took their desserts of peaches and ice cream. (Thanks guys!)

Kyle took us to red light district. I now know what "red light district" means. Walked through skinny street, which was near a church. Lots of opportunities for window shopping.

Now we couldn't take photos of who (or what) was in the windows, but to the left is an image of what we saw (this image has more clothing than what we actually saw and she was NOT rubbing her tummy).

I had to tell one lady that was waving at me to keep her door closed to save on air conditioning costs.

Saw an interesting water fountain (see picture on very right).

Oh my God. You're not going to put this on the Internet, are you?

Saw the sex show, which played this song, as lady was playing with her black toy. Saw glow stick. Saw doctor and nurse. Saw a rotating bed. Saw an ape really happy to be behind Steph. Contiki volunteers shared a banana with girl on stage. Back at hotel was another party night. Ashley from other Contiki group was busy filming everyone.
