- Knees apart - sit low - back straight - good base or "purchase" on the ice - feet at least shoulder width apart.
- Practice the "weave" daily - keep skates on ice and propel yourself by pushing on outside of blade - Practice forward and backward.
- Keep blades of skates on ice - don't pick up feet behind - you will have to bend knees to do this - Keep feet close to ice.
- When you bring the back leg forward - thrust it ahead with bent leg and knee leading.
- Thighs and hips give you propulsion.
- Do some "starts" and "stops" each day.
- Do not "coast" the corners or turns - Dip your inside shoulder and cross vigorously - Stay low by bending knees - Practice turns and cutting both ways with greater amount of time spent on direction you are weakest in.
- In backward skating assume a sitting position with weight on forward part of skates - Propel yourself by pushing off outside foot and twisting the hips.
- Speed can be improved by increased knee action and strengthened leg drive.
- Skate your fastest when you are trying to go by or around an opponent.
- "Go and stop" don't loop. - Take off by lifting your shoulders.
- Turn rear foot to side and bend knee to improve pushoff and drive.
