- Skate yourself into position - move inside the man and get contact before you work on the puck.
- After getting an inside position attack the puck carrier's stick.
- Don't try to reach from behind - you are gliding while your opponent is skating.
- In stick-checking (poke or sweep check) make the puck-carrier commit himself direction-wise first.
- When fore-checking on the press in the attacking zone or by the center in center ice force or steer the puck carrier in the direction (use circling approach) you want him to go. - Do not approach straight from the front.
- Don't coast while you try to check - you are likely to foul.
- Stay between your man and the puck but try not to turn your back to the play.
- Time your checking whenever possible in the other team's end so you attack the man when he has his back to you and is concentrating on getting to the puck.
- The best place to press or fore-check is in the corners or behind the net.
